The clay bear beside a jar of brown sugar

Two jars. Two little helpers.

If you bake with both light and dark brown sugar, assign one bear to each container. You can keep each lid closed between uses without moving one bear from jar to jar.

The hydrated clay releases moisture gradually. A well-fitting lid helps keep that moisture inside; the bear and the container work together.

A simple routine, again & again

Soak. Blot.
Tuck it in.

Submerge the bear in clean water for about 20 minutes, pat off visible droplets, and place it with the sugar. Re-soak when the sugar starts to firm up.

Rinse gently with plain water; avoid soap and fragrance. Inspect the ceramic before use, and remove any chipped or damaged bear from food.

How do I use a Brown Sugar Bear?

Soak it in clean water for about 20 minutes, pat the surface dry, and place it with brown sugar in a tightly closed container. Remove the bear before measuring or mixing.

When should I soak it again?

Check the sugar as you use it. When it starts to harden, repeat the soak-and-blot routine. The interval depends on your container, climate, and how often you open it.

Can I wash it with soap?

Rinse with plain water. The porous clay can retain soap or fragrance, so keep it separate from your usual soapy dishes.

Should I choose one bear or two?

Start with one for one brown-sugar container. A pair is useful for separate light and dark sugar jars, or for sharing with another baker.
